The Burnt Gate was originally made up of two cottages and a farm house. Parts of the building are around 300 years old and some around 125 years old. The name is unusual and is thought to be the only Burnt Gate in Britain. History tells us that opposite the pub there was a forest many years ago with a tollgate. It was known as the Brent Wood. It was burnt down, together with the tollgate,to make way for arable land, and then became known as the Burnt Gate.

Over the years we have extended and refurbished and have gone to great lengths to retain the original character. The public areas of the bar and restaurants have light wood beams and there is an oak floor and open coal fire in the bar, adding to the country house feel. There is a strong emphasis on comfort throughout the bar and restaurant areas. We can cater for parties large and small as we have seating in the restaurants for up to 60 people.
We have two full time chefs and three assistants, who create all the soups, sauces, pies and puddings our customers enjoy. We have made a name for ourselves with great food for all including coeliacs, vegetarians and vegans.

In addition to wonderful food and a warm and friendly welcome, we like the Burnt Gate to look attractive from the outside. During the summer months the pub is a blaze of colour from hanging baskets, window boxes and troughs. This has brought awards for Best Floral Display for the Borough in Bloom competition.
